chiropractic adjustments

The nerve system is a vital part of the human body. It is our communication, coordination, and transmission of signals throughout our body; it runs through the spine and controls everything. The nerve system is a vastly complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord, and chiropractors work hand in hand with this system. Adjusting the spine to optimal function positively impacts nerve system function and helps this system to work at its best. Evidence of chiropractic adjustment having a positive impact on nerve system function is grounded in numerous fields of research including neurology, neurophysiology, and biophysics.

If it weren’t for our spines, we wouldn’t be able to bend, dance, or drive a car. We cannot replace or transplant a new spine, we have to do what we can to take care of the one we have! However, we know that over the years due to wear and tear, poor posture, accidents, injury, etc. our spines take a beating- which is why we have chiropractic to keep us in alignment so our nerve system can function properly. Adjustments help alleviate the bone which in turn, takes pressure off the entire nerve system.
Not only does chiropractic serve the nerve system, it is important to note that Chiropractic is a global treatment, which means it helps with more than just nervous system disorders. Chiropractic Neurology(1) states it is also shown to result in improvement or resolution of many different neurological issues such as Tourette’s syndrome, epilepsy, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, cerebral palsy, and vertigo, many conditions, which we have seen and resolved in our office. We like to think of the nerve system as a computer- the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves are the wiring and monitor function, they control everything and make sure the system (the entire body) runs smoothly. By helping the nerve system to work better, chiropractic adjustment can help the entire body work better. When our spines wear out, it constricts the nerve system. If our nerve system is not working at 100%, our bodies are not working at their full potential. Even slight decreases in function can affect communication between the brain and all of the body’s cell, organs, and tissues.

It is important to make sure your nerve system is functioning at its optimal level. At Keystone Physical Medicine, we encourage you to get your spine checked, whether that is with us, or another office. It is always easier to detect a small problem earlier and fix it, rather than try to reverse the damage the problem will have caused when your health, and your ability to live and enjoy life are compromised. We are a natural integrated office committed to providing our patients with the best care in the Treasure Valley. Our integrated office includes Chiropractic care, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, Pain Management, as well as two Nurse Practitioners. All Physicians work together as a team to customize each individual’s needs and course of treatment. We are here to help, make an appointment and come see us! Your spine is so vital to your overall health, take care of it, and it will take care of you!

Forward Head Posture aka “Text Neck”

In today’s world, (as much as we don’t like to admit it), many of our jobs require us to sit for extended periods of time. Persistent neck, upper back, shoulder, and shoulder blade pain are all characteristics of a poked neck, otherwise known as forward head posture or “text neck.” Pair that with the ways in which we use our smart phones and smart devices in almost every aspect of our lives and it is no surprise to see the rapid increase in people with poor posture, added stress and strain on the neck, shoulders, back, and increased visits to doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists trying to figure out why this is occurring.
Forward head posture is where the head position protrudes forward in relation to the shoulder joint. Our posture, the way we sleep, the added technology component of sitting at a computer the majority of the day, AND the use of our cell phones for texting, social media etc. is a bit daunting when we look at the health of the neck and back.

How Do I Know If I Have Forward Head Posture?

Easy! Stand up right now and place your back flat against a wall with your bottom, lower back, and shoulder blades completely against the wall (make sure you’re not cheating by over arching your back or looking up at the ceiling. Look straight ahead). While you are standing, does the back of your head naturally come in contact with the wall? If yes, good for you! However, if your head doesn’t come in contact with the wall,  you are like the majority of patients that we see here at Keystone Physical Medicine, you’ve tested positive for forward head posture.

What Happens If I Don’t Fix It?

Forward head posture may be the reason for added strain, pressure, and tension on the neck muscles and joints, it reverses the cervical curve, and can lead to an increase in arthritis, a rapid rate of degeneration, and tension headaches.  If left untreated, not only can symptoms become worse, but aesthetically, it can result in an unfavorable and hunched over appearance. Over time, this can cause muscles to shorten, and impair nerve function, all of which are very difficult to reverse (if at all) once in its advanced stages.

What Causes Forward Head Posture?

Forward head posture is part of a bigger problem…and his name is bad posture. Our bodies were not designed for prolonged periods of sitting down or sedentary lifestyles. Our bodies adapt to different environments, and when we continually put ourselves in positions such as hours of sitting that are not optimal for our health, we are able to see the muscles that are responsible for good posture tighten, fatigue, and weaken. The body follows the head, so if you have forward head posture, you will find your shoulders hunching forward with it.

Treatment for forward head posture is best determined by a healthcare professional. At KPM, our integrated office approach combines Chiropractic Care, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Pain Management along with a Nurse Practitioner. All Physicians work together as a team to come up with the best course of care and customize a treatment plan based upon symptoms and severity. Although some do experience immediate relief, do not be discouraged if you do not see results right away.  One thing we like to remind our patients of is this; think about how long it took for your forward head posture to develop, it is going to take some time for the damage to be reversed and for it to be corrected. Whether it is regular adjustments, physical therapy, massage, or pain management, we are confident we can bring you relief and ultimately get you back on track. We aim to inspire health through integrated and natural care.  Give us a call, come see us, we are here to help!

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is nerve pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest single nerve in the body and is made up of individual nerve roots that branch out from the spine in the lower back and then combine to form the “sciatic nerve.” This nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttock, and down the backs of each leg. Portions of the sciatic nerve then branch out in each leg to innervate certain parts of the leg, thigh, calf, foot, and toes.

The sciatic nerve serves a vital role in connecting the spinal cord with the leg and foot muscles- think of it as controlling everything below the belly button. The thousands of branches that come off the sciatic nerve control and innervate a vast amount of movement, function, and sensation.

What is Sciatica pain?

Sciatica pain is anything that puts pressure on or irritates the sciatic nerve. The sensation of pain can vary widely such as pain that shoots down the back of one buttock or thigh to radiating pain down below the knee. Sciatica may feel like a mild ache, a sharp or burning sensation, or extreme debilitating discomfort. It can also cause feelings of numbness, weakness, and tingling in any part of the lower extremity such as buttocks, hip, thigh, calf, and foot.

What is causing it?

We at Keystone Physical Medicine in Boise see this happen most of the time when the spinal vertebra have been displaced or subluxated for a long period of time resulting in mild to moderate Degenerate Disc Disease. Sciatica can be very serious if not resolved early in its origination. Low back pain with Sciatica should always be examined prior to the issue becoming more serious. If your sciatic pain is excruciating, intense, traveling or radiating down one or both legs, you are experiencing tingling or numbness from the lower back to the feet, or you are experiencing any weakness or paralysis you should seek expert care immediately.

So, what can a Chiropractor do to help?

Teenagers are facing a problem with the use of technology and the toll it is taking on their bodies. The use of cell phones for texting, calling, social media, apps, games, and the constant need to be and feel connected are forming potentially dangerous issues inside of the body. Add on hours of video games, TV, and laptop use and we can see the culmination of technology use as being one the biggest indicators in teens for poor posture, headaches, and damage to the neck and the spine causing soreness, pain, misalignment, and lack of energy and productivity because the body is running inefficiently. This constant abuse to the natural spinal curves from poor posture can be very harmful to young teens.

We have all seen teenagers glued to their smart phones in a certain position, this is known as “text neck.” The neck is down creating forward head posture, the shoulders are rolled forward and slouched, and the teen is hunched over staring at their screen. The real issue at hand is that with the constant use of cell phones (for all of us, but especially in developing teens) is the damage that is occurring in the body over years as a result of this type of activity and the compromising position that the body is in while it is occurring.

Text neck and poor posture put an immense amount of strain on the muscles, nerves, discs, joints and nervous system. It can lead to abnormal bone growth, pain in the neck, shoulders and hips, headaches, fatigue, and weakened muscles. It can also cause many long-term issues such as arthritis, scoliosis, and headaches. It is not natural for the body to be in such a position for extended periods of time. Back pain is one of the most common complaints of teenagers and adults alike; and what is one of the most common causes for back pain? Poor posture!

As a parent, it is important to show good posture yourself and promote good posture in your teen. Note when you are sitting improperly and point it out to them so they can see how you correct it. Point out others with good posture and how confidant that person appears, your child may want to practice that. Encouraging exercise, limiting time in front of phones, TV, laptops etc. and teaching good habits from an early age can reduce injuries and pain down the line.

At Keystone Physical Medicine we know, we have kids, too! And we encourage check-ups as well. An early diagnosis means earlier treatment and prevention of developing more severe complications down the line. Knowing the condition of the neck and spine early is vital information to have, good or bad. Having all the bones and joints aligned properly prevents excessive strain on the body as a whole. Our integrated office is a team of Physicians that include a Chiropractor, Nurse Practitioner, Physical Therapist, and Massage Therapist who all work together to get your teens’ posture, and their health back on track. We know that teens can be difficult, but their posture shouldn’t be! Give us a call today, we are here to help, and we want to help.

Children & Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care for children has often been viewed by many people as unsafe or unnecessary. However, more and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) has provided groundbreaking studies on the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for children. Chiropractic offers families a solid foundation for wellness and a lifestyle that benefits overall health and well-being. Studies have shown improved immune system function, improved behavior and attitude, and improved sleeping.

Safe & Natural

Chiropractic is a safe and natural way for children to develop to their furthest potential. The nervous system helps control development and who they grow to be. It is imperative for the nervous system work properly, and for that to happen, children must to be free from vertebral subluxations. It is important to have a proactive, rather than a reactive approach to your child’s health. Chiropractic is the best hope to ensure just that. Many spinal problems seen later in adults can begin as early as birth. Birthing can put stress on an infant’s spine and developing nerve system. The ICPA states that “these irritations to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions, and chronic infections can often be traced to nervous system stress.”

Newborn Care

Many parents have their newborns checked right away since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth. While very few kids have sciatica and severe pain, spinal alignment is vital as the infant grows and learns to hold up their head, sit, crawl, and walk. During these times, it is invaluable to have children checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic. As they continue to grow and take on physical activities such as sports or riding a bike, etc. subluxations can occur (small yet significant spinal misalignments). If these injuries are neglected during such a rapid period of development and growth, it can lead to more serious problems later in life.  “Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.”  Chiropractors help stimulate the nerve system so no future issues have a chance to develop.

Care for Injuries

As parents, all we can hope for is an injury and pain free childhood, but often times, our children do get hurt or injured. One of the most common reasons parents seek care for their child is trauma from an accident or injury of some sort. Misalignments do not always result in immediate pain or symptoms, but having regular check ups can identify potential issues and corrections can be made early to prevent health complaints down the line. Other common complaints are “ear infections, asthma, allergies, and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.”

Spinal Health

Children deserve the chance to have their nervous system examined by a Chiropractic Doctor. Chiropractors are experts in checking the child’s spine for mis-alignments that impair nerve system function, which affects overall body function.
The spinal cord is involved in everything we do. It needs safe a home. “The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.” If we take a deeper look into the nerve system, it controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body. The “circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.” 1

At Keystone Physical Medicine, you can be sure your child’s health is in the best hands possible. Adjustments are modified to the child’s size, weight, and specific condition. Approaches are gentle and unique and we aim to increase your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health and well-being. We encourage you to come experience the difference that many children and parents know and love at our office. Give us a call, we are here to help and always put the health and wellness of you and your family, first.

Driver Suffering From Whiplash After Traffic Collision

At Keystone Physical Medicine, we are no strangers to auto accident injuries and the lingering pain that comes along with whiplash. Whiplash is something that is often overlooked but it is extremely serious and the effects can be debilitating. Whiplash is referred to as injuries to the neck caused by sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways- it is most commonly received from riding in a car that is struck from behind or that collides with another object.

Misconceptions about Whiplash Severity

A big problem that we see is the way in which most people view whiplash. It is often easily disregarded because you cant physically “see” the damage on the outside (swelling, cuts, bruises, contusions etc.) It is internal, with all the damage occurring inside of the body. People underestimate what their bodies go through when they are involved in a car accident (even at a low speed).

While the car may only be slightly damaged from an auto accident, the occupants can suffer considerable soft tissue injury. When the head is suddenly jerked back and forth beyond its normal limits, the muscles and ligaments supporting the spine and head can be overstretched or torn. The soft, pulpy, discs between the spinal bones can bulge, tear, or rupture and the vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing range of motion. The spinal cord and nerve roots in the neck can get stretched and extremely irritated as well.

Integrated Approach

Keystone Physical Medicine takes a natural integrated approach to auto accidents and whiplash injury. We combine Chiropractic care, Physical Therapy, Pain Management and Massage Therapy to help you achieve optimal results. We are home to some of the finest Physicians in the Valley and our patients have a team of Doctors working together to form a customized treatment plan to address pain, inflammation, stiffness, vertigo, spinal alignment, sleeplessness, and long term risk factors.

What We Can Do to Help

Our aim is to truly help people who are in auto accidents- so our car accident consultation is complimentary. We want to get the spine back in alignment, and catch inflammation early enough to reduce scar tissue. We encourage everyone who is involved in an accident to get a check up as soon as possible from a spine specialist. Give us a try and see if our team of specialists can help you. We also encourage you not to wait, the more time that goes on, the more likely you will have lingering symptoms, be dependent on medication, and need an invasive procedure such as surgery!

neck pain relief

Neck pain is caused by a variety of reasons and most people don’t realize how much their neck pain affects them during the day. Trauma from whiplash or other injuries cause sprains and strain in the neck muscles and damage to the spine. However, most people with neck pain do not know how or why they are experiencing neck pain. The degree of flexibility of the neck, coupled with the fact that it has the least amount of muscular stabilization and it has to support your 14-16 pound head, make it very susceptible to injury. Picture your head and neck like a bowling ball being held on top of a stick with small, thin, elastic bands. It doesn’t take much force to disrupt that delicate balance.

A large majority of us at some point in life have experienced a “kink” in the neck upon waking up that makes it difficult to turn the head. Neck pain can manifest as stiffness, soreness, discomfort, weakness, headaches, muscle spasms, ringing in the ears, etc., it has many forms and there is a reason as to why it is occurring. The extremely complex relationship of discs, joints, facets, nerves, and muscles can trigger neck problems and pain. At Keystone Physical Medicine, doctor’s work not only to relieve neck pain, but to find the root cause or source of why it is happening, and restore normal function to ultimately prevent the problem from coming back.

Dissecting neck pain a bit further, the spinal cord runs through a space in the vertebrae that send nerve impulses to every part of the body. Between each pair of cervical vertebrae, the spinal cord sends off large bundles of nerves that run down the arms, and to some degree, the upper back. This means that if your arm is hurting, it may actually be a problem in the neck! Symptoms in the arms can include numbness, tingling, cold, aching, and “pins and needles” These symptoms are often confused with carpal tunnel. Although whiplash injury is by far the most common cause of neck pain, poor posture and muscle imbalances play a large role as well. It is very easy to get into bad posture habits without even realizing it-even an activity as innocent as reading in bed can lead to pain, headaches, and more serious problems. Stress is also another indicator, when people become stressed- they unconsciously contract their muscles, causing neck pain. This ‘muscle guarding’ is a survival response designed to guard against injury. Muscle imbalances result in some muscles becoming overly tight, and some overly weak placing extra stress on the muscles in the back of the neck.

The Best Approach is an Integrated Approach

Whether your pain stems from whiplash in a car accident, injury, sports, stress, posture, whatever the case may be- Keystone Physical Medicine is dedicated to finding that root cause(s) of your neck pain and making sure it doesn’t return. We treat a wide range of injuries and pain from the neck, back, and extremities. We see acute injuries such as strains and sprains as well as chronic, and degenerate conditions. Chiropractor, Dr. Cory Sartin will often diagnose and associate the neck and upper back together, because most of the muscles that are associated with neck pain either attach to, or are located in, the upper back. These muscles include the trapezius, the levator scapulae, the cervical paraspinal muscles and the scalenes, as well as others. We also work hand in hand with personal injury attorneys and patients of auto accidents with severe injuries from whiplash.

Our integrated model sets us apart by combining a team that incorporates Chiropractic care, Physical Rehab, Pain Management and Massage Therapy to help you achieve optimal results. We are home to some of the finest Physicians in the Valley and each patient has a team of Doctors working together to form a customized treatment plan to address your pain or problem. Thorough examination and consultation along with X-rays allow Doctors to come up with the best plan of action. We want to find what is causing you pain, eliminate that pain by restoring function, and get you feeling better so you can get back to your normal life! Come see us and get your neck pain taken care of for good.

Headache pain relief in Boise

Headache and Migraine? Relief in Boise, Idaho

Headaches and migraine complaints are continually on the rise in both adults and children and they affect people in a number of ways. Most people suffering from headaches and migraines experience lack of productivity at work, problems in relationships (social, workplace, family,) trouble sleeping at night, and notice a gradual decline in their overall health. This gradual decline can bring about changes to their emotional well-being, constant feelings of tiredness and fatigue, and no longer enjoying the activities they once looked forward to. At Keystone Physical Medicine in Boise, Idaho our team of experts are dedicated to providing you a solution to your headaches.

What is Causing My Headaches?

Headaches occur for a reason, it is your body’s way of signaling you that something isn’t right. Headaches can be traced back to misalignments in your neck caused by poor posture, certain events, automobile and workplace accidents, emotional stress, chemical stress, physical stress, sports injuries, diet, dehydration, and more. Unfortunately, many headache and migraine sufferers have learned to “deal” with the problem by taking pain medication, avoiding social functions, delaying important events or vacations, and pretty soon their migraines and headaches are ruling their schedules and their lives. This is not normal!

At Keystone Physical Medicine, we get to the root cause of your headaches and fix it permanently. We are experts at determining what type of headaches you have and developing a customized treatment plan for you.

What Can a Chiropractor Do to Help?

Headaches are one the most common conditions seen in chiropractic offices. Over the last decade, headaches represented 13% of chiropractic patient’s presenting complaints. At Keystone Physical Medicine, we combine our Chiropractic care within our integrated approach. Doctors of Chiropractic recognize that a headache could be attributed to muscle tension and irritation of the nerves and blood vessels in the neck. Cervical vertebrae can become misaligned and irritate the nerve roots in the neck and may even cause minor constriction in some vessels which decreases blood supply to the brain and cause a headache.

We approach headaches from a naturalistic view. Chiropractors identify subluxation patterns (mis-aligned bones) in the spinal column, which puts unneeded pressure on the exiting nerves and blood vessels. This simple movement in or out of place can cause headaches.

Our Corrective Chiropractic Care method realigns the spine back to its normal curvature and alleviates unnecessary pressure on the nerves in your neck. By alleviating pressure on the nerves, our patients feel relief immediately and the frequency of headaches and migraines decreases. Our patients rely on us to take care of their headaches, migraines, and neck pain- and we are confident we can help you as well. Our treatment techniques are natural, non-invasive, pain free and non-surgical. At Keystone Physical Medicine, we aim to alleviate your headaches, restore function and energy throughout your body, and get patients back to optimal health.
